I’m certain most ghost hunters will agree with me, February is not a favorite month among us. Its damp, dreary, and cold weather forces visions of green grass and warm weather to dance around in our heads. Many let the month just idle on by! But not the Indy Chapter! We couldn’t let the unpredictable February weather bring us down! Oh no! In lieu of a monthly meeting in February with no hunt, the Indy Chapter Board was graciously allowed permission to extend an invite to its members and their families to engage in a casual overnight ‘ghostly getaway’ as well as an open invitation to participate in an investigation with the Bloomington Chapter.

The overnight took place at the Canyon Inn inside McCormick’s Creek State Park located in Spencer, Indiana. The rich history behind this structure, and of the land itself, made this site a perfect choice for a ghost hunting February retreat!

It was way back in 1888, when Dr. Frederick Denkewalter visited the area and found it serene, tranquil and refreshing, so he purchased the land and built upon it a sanitarium, a place dedicated to rejuvenating both the wealthy and weary alike. A place to get away and take a break from life!

The original sanitarium, built on the present-day Canyon Inn site, was a white-sided structure with long porches on every side offering guests view of the lovely landscaping Dr. Denkewalter took delight in doing the work himself. And it was with Dr. Denkewalter’s death in 1914, that the sanitarium and estate went up for auction. Luckily both Owen County as well as the State of Indiana decided to preserve the area, making McCormick’s Creek Indiana’s first state park in 1916.

The Canyon Inn opened its doors in the old sanitarium building. A few years later, in the early 1920's, the building was remodeled to include a new brink exterior. Since then, three wings have been added. There is also a banquet room, a swimming pool and even a recreation center.

Upon arrival, members were instructed to meet-up, one-by-one, in the rustic lobby where the presence of an enormous, blazing fireplace called to us on such a blustery weekend. After warming up and chatting around the fire, we were off to dinner. Good thing we were able to dine right there at the Inn because we didn’t have a lot of time to waste, we had a date with a television crew at the investigation site!

After dinner and quickly putting together our investigations gear, we carpooled to the site and arriving in plenty-of-time. There we chose to make the main floor’s largest room headquarters.

We then divided into teams and were sent off to investigate a large three-story structure; one renowned by the local folk and the IGT alike for being paranormally active.

Exceptional photographic evidence as well as multiple EVP recordings were obtained at the investigation site. The fact that the weekend was a complete success can't be denied, for there's talk already about us paying the site a return visit over the summer!

Lastly, a special thank you goes out to the Bloomington Chapter for coordinating such an exciting event and even more for allowing us the opportunity to share in their fun!
